Spherical code

Builds on Dot productAngle between two vectors

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let Sn−1={x∈ℝn:x⋅x=1}S^{n-1} = \set{x \in \R^n : x \cdot x = 1} be the unit sphere, where x⋅yx \cdot y is the dot product. A spherical code in ℝn\R^n is a finite nonempty subset C⊂Sn−1C \subset S^{n-1}. Let 0<θ≤π0 < \theta \le \pi. The code CC has minimal angle at least θ\theta if x⋅y≤cos⁡θx \cdot y \le \cos \theta for all distinct x,y∈Cx, y \in C. Equivalently, every two distinct points of CC make an angle at least θ\theta at the origin. The largest size of a spherical code in ℝn\R^n with minimal angle at least θ\theta is denoted A(n,θ)A(n, \theta).

Remarks

Example: the 2n2n points ±e1,…,±en\pm e_1, \dots, \pm e_n, where eie_i are the standard basis vectors, form a spherical code with minimal angle π/2\pi/2. Two distinct points among them have dot product 00 or −1-1, both at most cos⁡(π/2)=0\cos(\pi/2) = 0. Non-example: in ℝ2\R^2, the points (1,0)(1, 0), (0,1)(0, 1) and (1/2,1/2)(1/\sqrt 2, 1/\sqrt 2) do not have minimal angle at least π/2\pi/2, since the dot product of the first and the third is 1/2>01/\sqrt 2 > 0. The kissing number is τ(n)=A(n,π/3)\tau(n) = A(n, \pi/3).
