Spherical mean transform

Summary

The spherical mean transform sends a function ff on ℝn\R^n to a function Mf(x,r)M f(x, r). Its value is the average of ff over the sphere of center xx and radius rr. A continuous function is harmonic exactly when all its spherical means equal its value at the center. For a function of class C2C^2 the means satisfy the Darboux equation. This reduces the wave equation in ℝn\R^n to an equation in one space variable. Recovering ff from its means over spheres with centers on a fixed surface is the mathematical core of thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
