Spline interpolation
Builds on SplinePolynomial interpolation
Definition
Let , let with , and let . A spline interpolant of degree of the data is a spline of degree with knots such that for .
Remarks
The splines of degree with these knots form a space of dimension , and the interpolation conditions are equations. So further conditions are needed for uniqueness. For the interpolant is unique: it is the broken line through the data. For two end conditions are added. Examples are for the natural cubic spline, and prescribed values of and for the clamped cubic spline. Each of these choices gives a unique interpolant.
Example: data , , with . The broken line on and on is continuous, linear on each piece and takes the values , so it is the spline interpolant of degree .
Non-example: for the same data, takes the values . But it is not a spline of degree , because its pieces have degree . It is a polynomial interpolant, not a linear spline interpolant.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
