Stable vector bundle
Builds on Algebraic curveVector bundleWeil divisor
Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field and let be a smooth projective connected algebraic curve over . For a nonzero vector bundle on of rank , let be the degree of a divisor of its determinant line bundle . The slope of is . The bundle is stable if for every subbundle with . It is semistable if for every such .
Remarks
Example: every line bundle is stable, since it has no subbundle of intermediate rank. Non-example: let be line bundles with . Then is a subbundle of with , so is not even semistable. The bundle is semistable but not stable, since has the same slope . One may test with all nonzero proper coherent subsheaves instead of subbundles; the condition is the same. A stable bundle is simple: its only endomorphisms are the scalars. On a smooth projective variety of higher dimension with an ample class , slope stability (Mumford–Takemoto stability) uses torsion-free subsheaves and the degree .
