Definition
Statistical learning theory is the study of the following setting.
- There are an input space , an output space and an unknown probability distribution on .
- A loss function measures the cost of predicting when the truth is .
- The risk of a measurable function is , where has law .
- A learning algorithm maps a sample of independent and identically distributed pairs with law to a function . Usually lies in a fixed class .
Its questions are how fast approaches or the best possible risk, uniformly over the distributions in some class.
Remarks
A central tool is the uniform deviation , where is the empirical risk; it controls empirical risk minimization. For binary classification with the - loss, this deviation tends to uniformly over all if and only if has finite VC dimension.
Example: binary classification with , the - loss and the half-planes in fits the setting; then is the probability of a misclassification.
Non-example: clustering points with no labels does not fit clauses 2 and 3 as stated, since there is no output to predict. It belongs to unsupervised learning.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
