Definition
Let , let be an complex matrix, and let be an Hermitian matrix. Write for the conjugate transpose of . The Stein equation for and is for an unknown complex matrix .
Remarks
It is the discrete Lyapunov equation . More generally, the name is used for with given , , . This equation has a unique solution exactly when for every eigenvalue of and every eigenvalue of . If the spectral radius of is less than , the unique solution is , and is positive definite when is. Example: for , and , the equation reads , so ; the series gives as well. Non-example of solvability: for , and , the equation reads and has no solution, since for the eigenvalue .
