Steiner conic
Definition
Let be a projective plane. For a point , let be the pencil of all lines through . For a line , let be the range of all points on . For a point and a line not through , the maps , , and its inverse , , are perspectivities. A projectivity is a composition of finitely many such perspectivities. Let and be distinct points and let be a projectivity with . The Steiner conic of is the set of points
Remarks
The condition makes and distinct lines for every , so each intersection is a single point. The points and lie on : , and the line with gives .
Example: in the projective plane over a field , let and . The lines through are and the lines through are , with and up to scaling. Let send to ; this map is linear in the parameters, and over a field such maps are projectivities. The line is , and sends it to , so . Solving and with gives the points , and gives . So is the conic .
Non-example: let be a line through neither nor , and let be the line joining to . Then , so the condition fails. For the point is , so these points are the points of the line other than , not a conic.
In a plane over a field, Steiner's theorem says that the Steiner conics are exactly the non-degenerate projective conics.
