Example

Let SS be a set with a Steiner triple system on it, that is, a Steiner system S(2,3,n)S(2, 3, n). Its blocks are 33-element subsets of SS, and every two distinct points lie in exactly one block. The Steiner quasigroup of this system is SS with the binary operation ⋅\cdot given by:

  1. x⋅x=xx \cdot x = x for every x∈Sx \in S;
  2. x⋅y=zx \cdot y = z for x≠yx \ne y, where {x,y,z}\set{x, y, z} is the unique block that contains xx and yy.

This operation is commutative and idempotent, and it satisfies x⋅(x⋅y)=yx \cdot (x \cdot y) = y for all x,yx, y. For x≠yx \ne y the last law holds because x⋅y=zx \cdot y = z and x⋅z=yx \cdot z = y come from the same block.

Check that SS is a quasigroup, that is, every equation a⋅y=ba \cdot y = b and y⋅a=by \cdot a = b has exactly one solution yy. The law x⋅(x⋅y)=yx \cdot (x \cdot y) = y says that the map y↦a⋅yy \mapsto a \cdot y is its own inverse, so it is a bijection. Hence the equation a⋅y=ba \cdot y = b has the unique solution y=a⋅by = a \cdot b. By commutativity the equation y⋅a=by \cdot a = b has the same unique solution.

Remarks

The smallest case is S={0,1,2}S = \set{0, 1, 2} with the single block {0,1,2}\set{0, 1, 2}. There the operation is x⋅y=−x−y mod 3x \cdot y = -x - y \bmod 3. For instance 1⋅2=−3≡01 \cdot 2 = -3 \equiv 0, which is the third point of the block, and 1⋅1=−2≡11 \cdot 1 = -2 \equiv 1. Conversely, a commutative idempotent quasigroup that satisfies x⋅(x⋅y)=yx \cdot (x \cdot y) = y comes from a Steiner triple system, whose blocks are the sets {x,y,x⋅y}\set{x, y, x \cdot y} with x≠yx \ne y. The multiplication table of a Steiner quasigroup is a symmetric Latin square with entry xx in row xx and column xx.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
