Steiner symmetrization
Builds on Convex body
Definition
Let , let be a convex body, and let be a unit vector. Let . For , the set is empty or a closed segment; let be its length when it is nonempty. The Steiner symmetrization of in the direction is the set
Remarks
The set is again a convex body, it is symmetric under the reflection in , and it has the same volume as . Its surface area and its diameter are at most those of . Example: let be the triangle with vertices , , in and . The vertical chord over has length . So , the triangle with vertices , , , of area like . Non-example: the set has the same chord lengths as , but its chords are not centred on , so it is not the Steiner symmetrization. Some authors write for ; the operation is also defined for compact sets, with the one-dimensional measure of the section.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
