Stieltjes transform
Builds on Borel measureHolomorphic function
Definition
Let be a finite positive Borel measure on . The Stieltjes transform of is the function given by If is concentrated on , the same formula defines on .
Remarks
The integral converges absolutely, since for real . The function is holomorphic, satisfies , and has when and , because . Many authors use the opposite sign, , or call the Cauchy transform of . For on and , , the classical Stieltjes transform of the function .
Example: for the unit point mass , . For the uniform probability measure on , with the principal branch of the logarithm; the argument is a nonpositive real number only for .
Non-example: Lebesgue measure on is not finite, and diverges for every , so the formula does not define a transform.
