Definition
Let be a probability space with a filtration that carries a -dimensional Wiener process . Let and let be a nonempty closed set, the control set. Let and be continuous. Assume that they are Lipschitz in uniformly in , and that for a constant . Let and be continuous with and .
- An admissible control is a progressively measurable process with values in and .
- For an admissible control and , the state is the solution of the stochastic differential equation with .
- The cost of is , an expected value.
The stochastic optimal control problem is to find an admissible control with , the infimum over all admissible controls. Such a is an optimal control, and is the value.
Remarks
Under these hypotheses the state equation has a unique strong solution and the cost is finite. Starting the problem at time in state gives the value function . When is smooth enough, it solves the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation With the problem is a deterministic optimal control problem.
Example: , , , , and . The function satisfies . The minimum over of is , attained at . With , one has , and , so the equation holds. The optimal control is the feedback .
Non-example: the process for all is not admissible, because it is not adapted: it uses the future of the noise.
