Definition
Let be a finite population of units, and let be a partition of into nonempty strata of sizes . Choose sample sizes with . Stratified (simple random) sampling with these sizes draws, for each , a simple random sample of size from . The draws are independent. The sample is .
Remarks
For values attached to the units, the stratified estimator of the population mean is , where is the sample mean in . It is unbiased, with variance , where is the population variance of the in with divisor . Proportional allocation takes proportional to . Neyman allocation takes proportional to , which minimizes the variance for a fixed total .
Example: with strata and , and . The possible samples are , , and , each with probability .
Non-example: a simple random sample of size from the whole of . It can be , with no unit from , so it is not a stratified sample with .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
