Strict total order

Builds on Strict partial order

Definition

Let AA be a set. A strict total order on AA is a strict partial order << on AA such that, for all a,b∈Aa, b \in A with a≠ba \ne b, a<ba < b or b<ab < a.

Remarks

The relation << on ℝ\R is a strict total order: it is irreflexive, transitive, and for distinct reals xx and yy, x<yx < y or y<xy < x. The relation ⊊\subsetneq on the power set of {1,2}\set{1, 2} is a strict partial order but not a strict total order. The sets {1}\set{1} and {2}\set{2} are distinct, and neither is a proper subset of the other. The condition gives trichotomy: for all a,b∈Aa, b \in A, exactly one of a<ba < b, a=ba = b, b<ab < a holds. The strict total orders on AA correspond one to one with the total orders on AA, by a≤ba \le b if and only if a<ba < b or a=ba = b. Other names are strict linear order and strict simple order.
