Definition
Let be a family of algebras of the same signature, and let denote the projection of the direct product onto . A subdirect product of the family is a subalgebra of such that restricted to is surjective onto for every . An embedding is subdirect when is a subdirect product.
Remarks
Let be a family of congruences on an algebra . The map is a subdirect embedding of into if and only if .
Example: the map is a subdirect embedding of the ring into . It is a homomorphism, it is injective because a nonzero integer has only finitely many prime divisors, and each coordinate map is onto.
Non-example: the subgroup of is not a subdirect product. Its projection onto the second factor is , not all of .
