Definition

Let 𝐀\mathbf{A} be an algebra with universe AA having at least two elements, and let Ξ”A={(a,a):a∈A}\Delta_A = \set{(a, a) : a \in A}. The algebra 𝐀\mathbf{A} is subdirectly irreducible when the set of congruences on 𝐀\mathbf{A} different from Ξ”A\Delta_A has a least element. This least element is called the monolith of 𝐀\mathbf{A}.

Remarks

Equivalently, 𝐀\mathbf{A} is subdirectly irreducible when, for every subdirect embedding α ⁣:π€β†’βˆi∈I𝐀i\alpha \colon \mathbf{A} \to \prod_{i \in I} \mathbf{A}_i, some composite Ο€i∘α\pi_i \circ \alpha is an isomorphism. This is the form that gives the name, through subdirect products. In terms of the congruence lattice: the intersection of all congruences other than Ξ”A\Delta_A is not Ξ”A\Delta_A.

Example: the group β„€/4β„€\Z/4\Z is subdirectly irreducible. Its congruences come from the subgroups {0}βŠ‚{0,2}βŠ‚β„€/4β„€\set{0} \subset \set{0, 2} \subset \Z/4\Z, which form a chain, so the congruence of {0,2}\set{0, 2} is the monolith.

Non-example: the group β„€/6β„€\Z/6\Z is not subdirectly irreducible. The congruences modulo 22 and modulo 33 are both different from Ξ”\Delta, and their intersection is Ξ”\Delta, so there is no least one.

The ring β„€\Z is not subdirectly irreducible either, since the congruences modulo the primes intersect in Ξ”β„€\Delta_\Z.
