Subnormal number
Builds on Floating-point arithmetic
Definition
Consider a floating-point system with base , precision and minimal exponent . The smallest positive normalized number is . A subnormal number of the system is a real number where the digits are integers in , not all zero. Equivalently, with an integer and .
Remarks
Example: in IEEE binary64, , and , so the subnormal numbers are with ; the smallest is . Non-example: is not subnormal in binary64; it is the smallest positive normalized number, with leading digit . All subnormal numbers are multiples of the same spacing , which is also the spacing of the normalized numbers in . A subnormal number has fewer than significant digits, so the relative rounding error in the subnormal range can exceed the unit roundoff. Other names are denormal and denormalized numbers.
