Definition

Let XX be a topological space, let T ⁣:X→XT \colon X \to X be a homeomorphism, and let r ⁣:X→(0,∞)r \colon X \to (0, \infty) be a continuous function, the roof function, with inf⁡Xr>0\inf_X r > 0. On X×ℝX \times \R, let ∼\sim be the equivalence relation generated by (x,s+r(x))∼(T(x),s)for all x∈X, s∈ℝ.(x, s + r(x)) \sim (T(x), s) \quad \text{for all } x \in X,\ s \in \R. Let Xr=(X×ℝ)/∼X_r = (X \times \R) / \sim with the quotient topology, and write [x,s][x, s] for the class of (x,s)(x, s). The suspension flow of TT under rr is the flow (φt)t∈ℝ(\varphi_t)_{t \in \R} on XrX_r given by φt([x,s])=[x,s+t].\varphi_t([x, s]) = [x, s + t].

Remarks

The flow is well defined because the generating relation commutes with the translations (x,s)↦(x,s+t)(x, s) \mapsto (x, s + t). Every class has a representative (x,s)(x, s) with 0≤s<r(x)0 \le s < r(x). So XrX_r can be pictured as the region under the graph of rr, with the top point (x,r(x))(x, r(x)) glued to the bottom point (T(x),0)(T(x), 0). For 0≤s<r(x)0 \le s < r(x) and t≥0t \ge 0, the point φt([x,s])\varphi_t([x, s]) equals [Tn(x),s+t−∑k=0n−1r(Tk(x))][T^n(x), s + t - \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} r(T^k(x))], where TkT^k is the kk-th iterate and n≥0n \ge 0 is the number of times the orbit has hit the roof. The first-return map of the flow to the base {[x,0]:x∈X}\set{[x, 0] : x \in X} is TT, and the return time of [x,0][x, 0] is r(x)r(x). If μ\mu is a TT-invariant measure, the product of μ\mu with Lebesgue measure on the region under the graph of rr is invariant under the flow.

Example: let X=ℝ/ℤX = \R / \Z, T(x)=x+α mod 1T(x) = x + \alpha \bmod 1 and r=1r = 1. The map [x,s]↦(x+αs,s) mod ℤ2[x, s] \mapsto (x + \alpha s, s) \bmod \Z^2 is well defined, since (x,s+1)(x, s + 1) and (x+α,s)(x + \alpha, s) both go to (x+αs+α,s) mod ℤ2(x + \alpha s + \alpha, s) \bmod \Z^2. It identifies XrX_r with the torus ℝ2/ℤ2\R^2 / \Z^2, and it carries the suspension flow to the linear flow (u,v)↦(u+αt,v+t)(u, v) \mapsto (u + \alpha t, v + t) in the direction (α,1)(\alpha, 1).

The condition inf⁡Xr>0\inf_X r > 0 makes the sums ∑k=0n−1r(Tk(x))\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} r(T^k(x)) and ∑k=1nr(T−k(x))\sum_{k=1}^{n} r(T^{-k}(x)) tend to infinity, which is what gives every class a representative under the roof. Non-example: the doubling map x↦2x mod 1x \mapsto 2x \bmod 1 is not a homeomorphism, so the construction above does not apply to it; for non-invertible maps one uses a suspension semiflow, defined only for t≥0t \ge 0. With r=1r = 1, the space XrX_r is the mapping torus of TT.
