Symmetric difference

Builds on Set differenceUnion

Definition

Let AA and BB be sets. The symmetric difference of AA and BB is the set A△B=(A∖B)∪(B∖A).A \mathbin{\triangle} B = (A \setminus B) \cup (B \setminus A). An object xx is an element of A△BA \mathbin{\triangle} B when xx is an element of exactly one of AA and BB.

Remarks

Another notation is A⊖BA \ominus B. Example: {1,2,3}△{2,3,4}={1,4}\{1, 2, 3\} \mathbin{\triangle} \{2, 3, 4\} = \{1, 4\}. Also A△B=(A∪B)∖(A∩B)A \mathbin{\triangle} B = (A \cup B) \setminus (A \cap B). The power set of a set is a group under symmetric difference, with identity ∅\varnothing.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
