Definition
Let be a topos and let be a commutative ring object in . Let be the subobject of square-zero elements, and let be the object of maps from to . The pair satisfies the Kock–Lawvere axiom if the map is an isomorphism. Synthetic differential geometry is the development of differential calculus and differential geometry inside such a pair . Its reasoning uses the internal logic of , which is intuitionistic.
Remarks
The axiom says that every map is of the form for unique . For and , applying it to defines the derivative by for all . Tangent vectors at a point of an object are maps with .
Example: there are toposes containing the category of smooth manifolds in which the axiom holds, the well-adapted models. They are built from C-infinity rings; for instance, the ring plays the role of functions on .
Non-example: in the topos of sets, with , the axiom fails. Since has no nilpotent elements except , , so , and is not injective: and have the same image. The axiom forces , which is incompatible with classical logic in a field-like ; this is why the internal logic must be intuitionistic.
