Definition

Let f ⁣:[0,∞)→ℝf \colon [0, \infty) \to \R satisfy ∣f(t)∣≤CeAt\abs{f(t)} \le C e^{A t} for some constants C,A≥0C, A \ge 0 and all t≥0t \ge 0. For an integer n≥1n \ge 1, the Szász–Mirakyan operator SnS_n maps ff to the function Sn(f)(x)=e−nx∑k=0∞(nx)kk! f(kn),x≥0.S_n(f)(x) = e^{-nx} \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{(nx)^k}{k!} \, f\left(\frac{k}{n}\right), \qquad x \ge 0.

Remarks

The growth bound makes the series converge for all x≥0x \ge 0. Each SnS_n is a positive linear operator. The weights e−nx(nx)k/k!e^{-nx} (nx)^k / k! are the probabilities of the Poisson distribution with mean nxnx.

Example: if NN is Poisson with mean nxnx, then E[N]=nxE[N] = nx and E[N2]=nx+n2x2E[N^2] = nx + n^2 x^2. So Sn(1)=1S_n(1) = 1, Sn(t)(x)=xS_n(t)(x) = x and Sn(t2)(x)=x2+x/nS_n(t^2)(x) = x^2 + x/n.

Non-example: f(t)=et2f(t) = e^{t^2} is not in the domain, since ek2/n2(nx)k/k!e^{k^2/n^2} (nx)^k / k! does not tend to 00 as k→∞k \to \infty when x>0x > 0.

From the three moments and Korovkin's theorem, Snf→fS_n f \to f uniformly on each interval [0,b][0, b] for every bounded continuous ff.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
