Definition

Let KK be a field that is complete with respect to a nontrivial non-archimedean absolute value ∣⋅∣\abs{\cdot}, and let n≥0n \ge 0. For a multi-index ν=(ν1,…,νn)∈ℕn\nu = (\nu_1, \dots, \nu_n) \in \N^n write Xν=X1ν1⋯XnνnX^\nu = X_1^{\nu_1} \cdots X_n^{\nu_n} and ∣ν∣=ν1+⋯+νn\abs{\nu} = \nu_1 + \cdots + \nu_n. The Tate algebra in nn variables over KK is the subring Tn=K⟨X1,…,Xn⟩={∑ν∈ℕnaνXν∈K[ ⁣[X1,…,Xn] ⁣]:∣aν∣→0 as ∣ν∣→∞}T_n = K\langle X_1, \dots, X_n \rangle = \Big\{ \sum_{\nu \in \N^n} a_\nu X^\nu \in K[\![X_1, \dots, X_n]\!] : \abs{a_\nu} \to 0 \text{ as } \abs{\nu} \to \infty \Big\} of the formal power series ring. Its Gauss norm is ∥∑aνXν∥=max⁡ν∣aν∣\norm{\sum a_\nu X^\nu} = \max_\nu \abs{a_\nu}.

Remarks

The maximum exists because ∣aν∣→0\abs{a_\nu} \to 0. TnT_n is closed under multiplication, and the Gauss norm is multiplicative: ∥fg∥=∥f∥∥g∥\norm{fg} = \norm{f} \norm{g}. With this norm TnT_n is a Banach algebra over KK, and the polynomial ring K[X1,…,Xn]K[X_1, \dots, X_n] is dense in it. Let Kˉ\bar K be an algebraic closure of KK with the extended absolute value. A formal power series lies in TnT_n exactly when it converges at every point x∈Kˉnx \in \bar K^n with all ∣xi∣≤1\abs{x_i} \le 1. TnT_n is Noetherian, regular and a unique factorization domain, and it satisfies a Noether normalization lemma. The residue field of each maximal ideal of TnT_n is a finite extension of KK.

Example: over the completion ℚp\Q_p of ℚ\Q for the pp-adic absolute value, f=∑k≥0pkXkf = \sum_{k \ge 0} p^k X^k lies in T1T_1, because ∣pk∣p=p−k→0\abs{p^k}_p = p^{-k} \to 0; its Gauss norm is ∣1∣p=1\abs{1}_p = 1.

Non-example: ∑k≥0Xk\sum_{k \ge 0} X^k has all coefficients of absolute value 11, which do not tend to 00, so it is not in T1T_1; it diverges at X=1X = 1.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
