Definition
Let be an abelian group, written additively, and let be a prime number. For , let , a subgroup of the torsion subgroup. Multiplication by maps to . The -adic Tate module of is the inverse limit along these maps. It is a module over the -adic integers .
Let be an abelian variety over a field , and let be a separable closure of . The Tate module of is .
Remarks
If has dimension and is not the characteristic of , then is a free -module of rank . The absolute Galois group acts on each , and so continuously on .
Example: let be the group of roots of unity of -power order in . Then is cyclic of order , and the maps are onto. So , and this module is written .
Degenerate example: has no nonzero torsion, so every is and . The Tate module only sees the -power torsion of .
