Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring with identity, let δ∈R\delta \in R and let n≥1n \ge 1. The Temperley–Lieb algebra TLn(δ)TL_n(\delta) is the associative algebra over RR generated by elements e1,…,en−1e_1, \dots, e_{n-1}, subject to the relations:

  1. ei2=δeie_i^2 = \delta e_i for 1≤i≤n−11 \le i \le n - 1.
  2. eiei+1ei=eie_i e_{i+1} e_i = e_i and ei+1eiei+1=ei+1e_{i+1} e_i e_{i+1} = e_{i+1} for 1≤i≤n−21 \le i \le n - 2.
  3. eiej=ejeie_i e_j = e_j e_i for ∣i−j∣>1\abs{i - j} > 1.

Remarks

The algebra TLn(δ)TL_n(\delta) is a free RR-module of rank equal to the Catalan number Cn=1n+1(2nn)C_n = \frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}, with a basis given by non-crossing planar pairings of 2n2n points. Example: TL3(δ)TL_3(\delta) has rank C3=5C_3 = 5, with basis 1,e1,e2,e1e2,e2e11, e_1, e_2, e_1 e_2, e_2 e_1. The check: every longer word reduces to one of these, for instance e1e2e1=e1e_1 e_2 e_1 = e_1 and e1e2e2=δe1e2e_1 e_2 e_2 = \delta e_1 e_2. Non-example: in the group algebra R[S3]R[S_3], the transpositions s1=(1 2)s_1 = (1\,2) and s2=(2 3)s_2 = (2\,3) satisfy s1s2s1=(1 3)≠s1s_1 s_2 s_1 = (1\,3) \ne s_1, so they do not satisfy relation 2. For suitable δ\delta, TLn(δ)TL_n(\delta) is a quotient of the Hecke algebra of the symmetric group SnS_n.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
