Term evaluation
Definition
Let be a signature with only function symbols and let be a set of variables. Let be a structure of signature , that is, an algebra, with operations . Let be a map, called an assignment. The value of a term over and is defined by recursion on :
- if is a variable , then ;
- if is a constant symbol , then ;
- if for a function symbol of arity , then .
Remarks
The recursion is well defined because every term has a unique reading. The value depends only on the values of at the variables that occur in . If these variables are among and , one writes .
Example: in the ring , let and , . Clause 1 gives and , clause 2 gives , and clause 3 twice gives and .
Non-example: computing at the same assignment as is not term evaluation. The outermost symbol of is applied to and , so clause 3 requires the product of the values and .
Homomorphisms commute with evaluation: if is a homomorphism, then .
In Mathlib term evaluation is FirstOrder.Language.Term.realize.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
