Dynamical systems and ergodic theory Hamiltonian dynamics Example
Toda lattice
Example
Let . The open Toda lattice is the Hamiltonian system on with positions , momenta and Hamiltonian It describes particles on a line with exponential forces between neighbours.
It is an integrable system. Flaschka's variables are for and for . Let be the symmetric tridiagonal matrix with diagonal entries and off-diagonal entries . The equations of motion can be written as a Lax pair equation , where is an antisymmetric tridiagonal matrix whose off-diagonal entries are . So is conjugate to for all , and the eigenvalues of , or the traces for , are first integrals. These integrals are independent and Poisson-commute, which gives Liouville integrability.
A check of the scaling: . Also is a multiple of the total momentum.
Remarks
Morikazu Toda introduced the lattice in 1967. Its integrability was shown by Hénon and by Flaschka in 1974. There is also a periodic Toda lattice, with , which is integrable as well.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
