Definition

Let XX and YY be topological spaces, and let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X and g ⁣:Y→Yg \colon Y \to Y be continuous maps. A topological conjugacy from ff to gg is a homeomorphism h ⁣:X→Yh \colon X \to Y such that h∘f=g∘h,h \circ f = g \circ h, where ∘\circ is composition. The maps ff and gg are topologically conjugate if such an hh exists.

For flows φ\varphi on XX and ψ\psi on YY, a topological conjugacy is a homeomorphism h ⁣:X→Yh \colon X \to Y with h∘φt=ψt∘hh \circ \varphi_t = \psi_t \circ h for all t∈ℝt \in \R.

Remarks

The relation h∘f=g∘hh \circ f = g \circ h gives h∘fn=gn∘hh \circ f^n = g^n \circ h for all n≥0n \ge 0, so hh maps orbits of ff onto orbits of gg. In particular hh maps fixed points to fixed points and periodic points of minimal period pp to periodic points of minimal period pp. Topological conjugacy is an equivalence relation on continuous self-maps.

Example: the tent map T(x)=1−∣2x−1∣T(x) = 1 - \abs{2x - 1} and the logistic map f(x)=4x(1−x)f(x) = 4x(1 - x) on [0,1][0, 1] are conjugate through h(x)=sin⁡2(πx/2)h(x) = \sin^2(\pi x / 2). The map hh is an increasing homeomorphism of [0,1][0, 1]. One has f(h(x))=4sin⁡2(πx/2)cos⁡2(πx/2)=sin⁡2(πx)f(h(x)) = 4 \sin^2(\pi x/2) \cos^2(\pi x/2) = \sin^2(\pi x). Also h(T(x))=sin⁡2(πx)h(T(x)) = \sin^2(\pi x) for x≤1/2x \le 1/2, and h(T(x))=sin⁡2(π−πx)=sin⁡2(πx)h(T(x)) = \sin^2(\pi - \pi x) = \sin^2(\pi x) for x≥1/2x \ge 1/2.

Non-example: f(x)=x/2f(x) = x/2 and g(x)=−x/2g(x) = -x/2 on ℝ\R are not conjugate. A conjugacy hh would map the only fixed point 00 to 00, so it would map (0,∞)(0, \infty) onto (0,∞)(0, \infty) or onto (−∞,0)(-\infty, 0). Since ff maps (0,∞)(0, \infty) into itself while gg maps each half-line into the other one, h∘f=g∘hh \circ f = g \circ h fails.

For flows, the weaker notion of topological equivalence only asks that hh map orbits onto orbits and preserve their direction, not the time parametrisation.
