Definition
A topological dynamical system is a pair where is a topological space and is a continuous map. More generally, it is a triple where is a topological group and is a continuous group action. Topological dynamics is the study of the properties of such systems that are preserved by topological conjugacy, that is, by homeomorphisms with .
Remarks
In most of the theory is a compact metric space, and is a homeomorphism or is or . A map gives an action of the monoid by ; a homeomorphism gives an action of ; a continuous flow gives an action of . Example: the circle with is a topological dynamical system, since is continuous. Non-example: with for and for is not one, because is not continuous at .
