Total variation diminishing scheme

Definition
Consider a scalar conservation law in one space dimension, and a numerical scheme that maps a grid function to . The discrete total variation of a grid function is The scheme is total variation diminishing (TVD) if for every grid function with .
Remarks
Example: for with , the upwind scheme with gives . By the triangle inequality and a shift of the index, . Non-example: the Lax–Wendroff method with , applied to the step for and for , gives , and for the other . So . Harten's criterion: a scheme that can be written as with , and for all is TVD. Every monotone conservative scheme is TVD, and every TVD scheme is monotonicity preserving.
