Definition

Let PP and QQ be probability measures on a measurable space (𝒳,ℱ)(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{F}). The total variation distance between PP and QQ is δ(P,Q)=sup⁡A∈ℱ∣P(A)−Q(A)∣.\delta(P, Q) = \sup_{A \in \mathcal{F}} \abs{P(A) - Q(A)}.

Remarks

It lies in [0,1][0, 1], and it is a metric on the probability measures on (𝒳,ℱ)(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{F}). If λ\lambda is a measure with densities p=dP/dλp = dP/d\lambda and q=dQ/dλq = dQ/d\lambda, then δ(P,Q)=12∫∣p−q∣ dλ\delta(P, Q) = \frac{1}{2} \int \abs{p - q} \, d\lambda, and the supremum is attained at A={p>q}A = \set{p > q}. Equivalently, δ(P,Q)=12∥P−Q∥\delta(P, Q) = \frac{1}{2} \norm{P - Q}, where ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot} is the total variation norm of the signed measure P−QP - Q. Some authors call ∥P−Q∥\norm{P - Q} itself the total variation distance, which differs by the factor 22.

Example: let PP and QQ be Bernoulli distributions with parameters pp and qq. The four events are ∅\emptyset, {0}\set{0}, {1}\set{1} and {0,1}\set{0, 1}, with differences 00, ∣q−p∣\abs{q - p}, ∣p−q∣\abs{p - q} and 00. So δ(P,Q)=∣p−q∣\delta(P, Q) = \abs{p - q}.

Non-example: the largest difference over single points, sup⁡x∣P({x})−Q({x})∣\sup_x \abs{P(\set{x}) - Q(\set{x})}, is not the total variation distance. For the normal distributions with means 00 and 11 and variance 11, every point has probability 00, so this quantity is 00. Yet δ(P,Q)>0\delta(P, Q) > 0, since the two measures are different.
