Definition
Let be a bounded open set with boundary , carrying its surface measure, and let . The trace operator is the unique bounded linear map such that for every that is continuous on . Here is the Sobolev space. The function is the trace of on .
Remarks
The operator exists and is unique. For smooth up to the boundary, the divergence theorem gives with depending on and . Such functions are dense in , so restriction extends uniquely to a continuous linear map on all of .
Example: on the boundary is , and every has a continuous representative. Its trace is the pair of values of that representative.
Non-example: on , restriction to the boundary is not bounded for the norm alone. The functions satisfy while , so no bounded map extends restriction. This is why the definition uses .
The kernel of is . For , the image of is the fractional Sobolev space , a result of Gagliardo.
