Transfinite diameter
Builds on Compact set
Definition
Let be a compact set in . For an integer , let The transfinite diameter of is .
Remarks
The maximum exists because is compact and the product is continuous. The sequence is nonincreasing, so the limit exists. To see this, drop one point from an optimal -tuple in each of the possible ways and multiply the resulting inequalities. The number is the diameter of .
Example: let be the unit circle and let . The square of the Vandermonde determinant of has absolute value , so these points give the product . By Hadamard's inequality no points of the closed unit disc give more, so , which tends to .
Non-example: the limit of is not the diameter in general. For the unit circle , while .
A finite set has , since for larger than the number of points two of the coincide.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
