Transform pair

Builds on Integral transform

Definition

Let TT be an integral transform, defined on a class AA of functions. A transform pair for TT is a pair (f,F)(f, F) with f∈Af \in A and F=TfF = Tf. It is written f↔Ff \leftrightarrow F.

Remarks

Example: for the Laplace transform TT and a real number aa, the pair (eat,1/(s−a))(e^{at}, 1/(s - a)) is a transform pair, because ∫0∞eate−st dt=1/(s−a)\int_0^\infty e^{at} e^{-st}\, dt = 1/(s - a) for s>as > a. Non-example: (1,1/s2)(1, 1/s^2) is not a Laplace transform pair, because the Laplace transform of 11 is 1/s1/s, not 1/s21/s^2. When TT is injective on AA, each FF in the image determines ff, and the pair can be read in both directions.
