Definition
Let be a projective plane and let be a line of . An elation with axis is a collineation of with two properties. It fixes every point of , and for some point on it maps every line through to itself. The plane is a translation plane with respect to if the following holds. For any two points and not on , some elation with axis maps to . The line is then a translation line of .
Remarks
Example: let be a field and let be the projective plane over , with the line at infinity. For , the translation of maps lines to parallel lines, so it extends to a collineation of that fixes every point at infinity. If , it maps each line of direction to itself. So it fixes every line through the point at infinity of that direction, and it is an elation with axis . The translation by maps to , so is a translation plane with respect to .
Non-example: the Hughes plane of order is a projective plane that is not a translation plane with respect to any of its lines.
When is a translation plane with respect to , the elations with axis form an abelian group that acts regularly on the points off . The translation planes are exactly the planes coordinatized by quasifields.
