Definition
Let and let be continuous. The trapezoidal rule is the quadrature rule For an integer , let and for . The composite trapezoidal rule with subintervals is the sum of over the subintervals .
Remarks
is the closed Newton–Cotes formula with , and its degree of exactness is . Example: for on and , , while . Non-example: the left Riemann sum is not the composite trapezoidal rule. It gives full weight to and none to ; for on and it gives instead of . The composite rule is the average of the left and right Riemann sums. For a continuous function of period , , and for smooth periodic the error decreases faster than any power of .
