Traveling wave
Definition
Consider a partial differential equation for a function of a space variable and a time variable . A traveling wave solution is a solution of the form where is the speed and is the profile. When the limits exist and differ, the wave is called a front. When they exist and are equal and is not constant, it is called a pulse.
Remarks
In one also considers plane traveling waves for a unit vector . Substituting turns the equation into an ordinary differential equation for , in which is an unknown parameter.
Example: the viscous Burgers' equation , with , has the front for every . Check: with , the equation becomes . Integrating once with gives , which this satisfies. The front goes from to , and its speed is the average of the two states, as for a shock.
Non-example: solves the heat equation , but it is not a traveling wave. For a traveling wave, does not depend on , while here it equals .
