Tricomi confluent hypergeometric function
Builds on Confluent hypergeometric functionGamma functionKummer's equation
Definition
Let and be complex numbers, let , and let be the principal branch. Let be Kummer's function and the gamma function, with read as at the poles of . If , the Tricomi confluent hypergeometric function is If , it is defined by continuity: .
Remarks
The function solves Kummer's equation, since both terms of the definition do. It is characterised among the solutions by as with , for each . For and it has the integral form Example: ; for and the integral is . Non-example: itself is in general not a multiple of ; for it is , which grows faster than any power as . The two functions satisfy Kummer's second transformation .
