Associative rings and algebras Example
Tropical semiring
Example
Let . For , define with the conventions and . Then is a commutative semiring, the tropical semiring in its min-plus form.
The check of the semiring axioms:
- is associative and commutative, and is its neutral element, since .
- is associative and commutative, and is its neutral element, since .
- distributes over : , because adding preserves the order.
- is absorbing for : .
For instance, and , and .
Remarks
The semiring is idempotent: . It is not a ring, since has no additive inverse: has no solution in . Every element has the inverse for , so the tropical semiring is a semifield. The map is an isomorphism onto the max-plus semiring , the base of max-plus algebra. Some authors call that max-plus form the tropical semiring instead.
