Tychonoff's non-uniqueness example
Builds on Heat equation
Counterexample
There is a function , smooth and not identically zero, such that So the Cauchy problem for the heat equation on with initial value has a solution other than . One construction: fix , let for and for , and set Term by term, of the -th term is the -th term with replaced by , so formally . There are constants with for . These bounds show that the series and its differentiated series converge locally uniformly, so is a genuine solution. Since is not identically zero, neither is .
Remarks
The solution grows very fast in : on no strip is it bounded by for constants and . Tychonoff showed that uniqueness does hold in the class of solutions with . So a growth condition at infinity is needed for uniqueness on the whole line; on a bounded interval with boundary values, the maximum principle gives uniqueness without one. Nonnegative solutions are also unique, by Widder's theorem, so must change sign.
