Unary algebra

Builds on SetUnary operationFunction

Definition

Let AA be a set and let II be an index set. A unary algebra is a pair (A,(fi)i∈I)(A, (f_i)_{i \in I}), where each fi ⁣:A→Af_i \colon A \to A is a unary operation on AA. It is mono-unary when II has exactly one element. A homomorphism of unary algebras (A,(fi))(A, (f_i)) and (B,(gi))(B, (g_i)) with the same index set is a function h ⁣:A→Bh \colon A \to B with h(fi(a))=gi(h(a))h(f_i(a)) = g_i(h(a)) for all i∈Ii \in I and a∈Aa \in A.

Remarks

Example: (ℤ,s)(\Z, s) with s(n)=n+1s(n) = n + 1 is a mono-unary algebra, since ss maps ℤ\Z to ℤ\Z. The map h ⁣:ℤ→ℤ/2ℤh \colon \Z \to \Z/2\Z, h(n)=n mod 2h(n) = n \bmod 2, is a homomorphism to (ℤ/2ℤ,t)(\Z/2\Z, t) with t(x)=x+1t(x) = x + 1, because h(n+1)=h(n)+1h(n + 1) = h(n) + 1.

Non-example: (ℕ,p)(\N, p) with the predecessor p(n)=n−1p(n) = n - 1 is not a unary algebra, since p(0)=−1∉ℕp(0) = -1 \notin \N; the predecessor is only a partial operation on ℕ\N.

A unary algebra (A,(fi)i∈I)(A, (f_i)_{i \in I}) is the same as an action of the free monoid I∗I^* on AA: a word i1i2⋯iki_1 i_2 \cdots i_k acts by fik∘⋯∘fi1f_{i_k} \circ \cdots \circ f_{i_1} in one common convention.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
