Unary operation

Builds on Finitary operationFunction

Definition

Let AA be a set. A unary operation on AA is a finitary operation of arity 11, that is, a function f ⁣:A→Af \colon A \to A.

Remarks

Example: the absolute value x↦∣x∣x \mapsto \abs{x} is a unary operation on ℝ\R, because ∣x∣∈ℝ\abs{x} \in \R for every x∈ℝx \in \R.

Non-example: the map x↦1/xx \mapsto 1/x is not a unary operation on ℝ\R, because it is not defined at 00. It is a unary operation on ℝ∖{0}\R \setminus \set{0}.

A unary operation is often written in prefix notation f(x)f(x) or −x-x, in postfix notation x−1x^{-1} or x!x!, or with a bar xˉ\bar{x}. Here A1A^1 is identified with AA.
