Uniform boundedness conjecture for preperiodic points
Builds on Algebraic number fieldProjective spaceArithmetic dynamics
Statement
Let , and be integers. There is a constant with the following property. Let be a number field with . Let be a morphism of degree defined over . Then the number of preperiodic points of in is at most .
Remarks
Here a point of projective space is preperiodic for when its forward orbit is finite, as in arithmetic dynamics. For each single , the set of preperiodic points in is finite by Northcott's theorem on heights. The conjecture asks for a bound that depends only on , and .
The conjecture is open, even for the maps with acting on .
The case , implies the uniform boundedness of torsion of elliptic curves, proved by Merel in 1996. Indeed, let be an elliptic curve over . The -coordinates of its torsion points are preperiodic points of the degree Lattès map that describes doubling on . At most two points of share an -coordinate.
