Definition

Consider a floating-point system with base β\beta, precision pp and minimal exponent emin⁡e_{\min}. Let x≠0x \ne 0 be a floating-point number written as x=±(d0.d1…dp−1)β×βex = \pm (d_0 . d_1 \ldots d_{p-1})_\beta \times \beta^{e}, with d0≠0d_0 \ne 0 if e>emin⁡e > e_{\min}. The unit in the last place of xx is ulp(x)=β e−p+1,\mathrm{ulp}(x) = \beta^{\,e - p + 1}, the value of the digit position dp−1d_{p-1}.

Remarks

Example: with β=10\beta = 10 and p=3p = 3, the number x=3.14=3.14×100x = 3.14 = 3.14 \times 10^{0} has e=0e = 0, so ulp(x)=10−2\mathrm{ulp}(x) = 10^{-2}; its neighbours are 3.133.13 and 3.153.15. Non-example: in the same system, 0.0010.001 is not the ulp of 3.143.14, since 3.1413.141 is not a floating-point number of precision 33. The ulp of 11 is β1−p\beta^{1-p}, the machine epsilon. Several variants of the definition exist; some define ulp(x)\mathrm{ulp}(x) for every real xx as the gap between the two floating-point numbers closest to xx. They agree away from powers of β\beta. Rounding to nearest gives an error of at most 12ulp\tfrac12 \mathrm{ulp} of the result.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
