Unit-regular ring
Definition
Let be a ring with unit . The ring is unit-regular if for every there is a unit of such that
Remarks
A unit-regular ring is von Neumann regular. Example: a division ring ; for take , and for take . Example: the matrix ring over a field . Write with invertible and ; then gives . A unit-regular ring is Dedekind-finite: if and , then , so and . Non-example: let be a vector space with countable basis over a field, and . The ring is von Neumann regular, but the shift and with , satisfy . So is not Dedekind-finite, hence not unit-regular.
