Definition
Let be an integer. A unital of order is a block design such that:
- the point set has elements;
- every block has elements;
- any two distinct points of lie in exactly one common block.
Remarks
Equivalently, a unital of order is a Steiner system .
Let be a projective plane of order . A unital is embedded in if is a set of points of and the blocks are the intersections of with lines that have size . In that case every line of meets in or points.
Example: let be a prime power and let be the finite field with elements. In , the Hermitian curve , the set of isotropic points of a non-degenerate Hermitian form, has points. Each line meets it in or points, so with the secant lines as blocks it is a unital of order .
Non-example: in the Fano plane, blocks have size and any two points lie in exactly one block. But it has points rather than , so clause 1 fails.
