Universal Horn class
Builds on Horn clauseSignatureStructureSentence
Definition
Let be a first-order signature. A universal Horn sentence of is a sentence in which is a Horn clause. The atoms of are atomic -formulas, possibly equations, in the variables . Let be a class of -structures. Then is a universal Horn class if there is a set of universal Horn sentences of with the following property. A -structure is in exactly when it satisfies every sentence of .
Remarks
Equivalently, each axiom has one of the forms or with atomic and . Universal Horn sentences are preserved by substructures and by direct products of nonempty families, so every universal Horn class is closed under these constructions.
Example: partial orders, in the signature with one binary relation , form a universal Horn class. Its axioms , and are universal Horn sentences.
Non-example: total orders do not form a universal Horn class. The product of the 2-element chain with itself, ordered coordinatewise, is a partial order in which and are incomparable, so the class is not closed under products.
When has only function symbols, the universal Horn sentences of the first form are exactly the quasi-identities, so the corresponding classes are the quasivarieties.
