Definition
Let be a morphism of schemes that is locally of finite type. For and , let and be the maximal ideals of the local rings and . Let and be the residue fields. The morphism is unramified at if the following two conditions hold.
- .
- is a finite separable extension of .
The morphism is unramified if it is unramified at every point of .
Remarks
An open immersion or a closed immersion is unramified. For a closed immersion, each is a quotient of , so both conditions hold with . For a field of characteristic not , the map given by is not unramified at . There , which is strictly smaller than , so condition 1 fails. For locally of finite type, is unramified exactly when the sheaf of relative Kähler differentials is zero. Some authors, as in EGA, also require to be locally of finite presentation. The ring version of this notion is an unramified morphism of rings.
