Definition
Let be a nonempty compact set and . Let be continuous and Lipschitz in uniformly in . Let and be continuous. For and a measurable control , let be the trajectory of the control system with , and set The value function of this optimal control problem is the function given by
Remarks
Under these hypotheses the trajectories from stay in a bounded set, so is finite. By definition , and a control is optimal from exactly when . Example: , , , and . From one can move toward at speed at most , so . This is Lipschitz but not differentiable where and . Non-example: the cost of one fixed control is in general not the value function. For in the example it is , which is larger than when and . For maximization problems the infimum is replaced by a supremum. For infinite-horizon problems with discounting, depends only on the initial state.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
