Definition

Let UU be an open subset of ℂn+1\C^{n+1} and let f ⁣:U→ℂf \colon U \to \C be a holomorphic function. Let p∈Up \in U be a nondegenerate critical point of ff with f(p)=0f(p) = 0. This means that the partial derivatives of ff vanish at pp and the Hessian matrix (∂2f/∂zj∂zk(p))\left( \partial^2 f / \partial z_j \partial z_k (p) \right) is invertible. By the holomorphic Morse lemma there are holomorphic coordinates w0,…,wnw_0, \dots, w_n centred at pp, on a ball BB about pp, in which f=w02+⋯+wn2f = w_0^2 + \cdots + w_n^2. For small real t>0t > 0, the set Σt={w∈B:w0,…,wn∈ℝ, w02+⋯+wn2=t}\Sigma_t = \set{w \in B : w_0, \dots, w_n \in \R, \ w_0^2 + \cdots + w_n^2 = t} is an nn-dimensional sphere in the fibre f−1(t)∩Bf^{-1}(t) \cap B. The vanishing cycle at pp is the class δ=[Σt]\delta = [\Sigma_t] in the homology group Hn(f−1(t)∩B;ℤ)H_n(f^{-1}(t) \cap B; \Z), defined up to the sign fixed by an orientation of Σt\Sigma_t.

Remarks

When BB is a ball in the coordinates ww, the class δ\delta generates the reduced homology H~n(f−1(t)∩B;ℤ)≅ℤ\tilde H_n(f^{-1}(t) \cap B; \Z) \cong \Z, and Σt\Sigma_t shrinks to the point pp as t→0t \to 0. Let f−1(c)f^{-1}(c) be a fibre further away, joined to tt by a path γ\gamma of regular values. Transporting δ\delta along γ\gamma gives a vanishing cycle in Hn(f−1(c);ℤ)H_n(f^{-1}(c); \Z), which depends on the homotopy class of γ\gamma.

Example: n=0n = 0 and f(w)=w2f(w) = w^2. The fibre f−1(t)f^{-1}(t) is the two points ±t\pm\sqrt{t}, and δ=[t]−[−t]\delta = [\sqrt{t}] - [-\sqrt{t}] in H0H_0.

Example: n=1n = 1 and f(w)=w02+w12f(w) = w_0^2 + w_1^2. The local fibre is an annulus, and δ\delta is the class of its core circle.

Non-example: the critical point 00 of f(w)=w3f(w) = w^3 is degenerate, since the Hessian is 00. Its local fibre is three points, with reduced H0H_0 of rank 22, so it is not described by one vanishing cycle. After a small perturbation w3−sww^3 - sw with s≠0s \ne 0, it splits into two nondegenerate critical points, each with its own vanishing cycle.
