Versal unfolding
Builds on Germ of a smooth functionSmooth function
Definition
Let be a germ of a smooth function. An -parameter unfolding of is a smooth germ with . An -parameter unfolding of is induced from if there are smooth germs , and with and The unfolding is versal if every unfolding of , with any number of parameters, is induced from . A versal unfolding with the least possible number of parameters is universal, or miniversal.
Remarks
Let be the ring of smooth germs at on and the ideal generated by the partial derivatives of . The versality theorem says that is versal if and only if where are the parameters. Example: for , and has basis the classes of and ; for one has , so is versal, and universal, since one parameter is needed. Non-example: is an unfolding of , but lies in , so the class of is not reached and is not versal. Indeed, every function has a critical point near , while has none for . A germ has a versal unfolding with finitely many parameters if and only if is finite-dimensional. If moreover has a critical point at , a universal unfolding has parameters.
