Definition

Let P⊂ℝdP \subset \R^d be a convex polytope. A vertex of PP is a face of PP of dimension 00, identified with the single point it contains. Equivalently, a point v∈Pv \in P is a vertex if there is a vector c∈ℝdc \in \R^d such that c⋅v>c⋅xc \cdot v > c \cdot x for every x∈Px \in P with x≠vx \ne v.

Remarks

Example: in the square P=[0,1]2P = [0,1]^2, the point v=(1,1)v = (1,1) is a vertex. Take c=(1,1)c = (1,1): then c⋅v=2c \cdot v = 2, and c⋅x=x1+x2<2c \cdot x = x_1 + x_2 < 2 for every other point xx of PP.

Non-example: the point (1,12)(1, \tfrac12) of the same square is not a vertex. For any cc, the points (1,12±t)(1, \tfrac12 \pm t) for small t>0t > 0 lie in PP, and c⋅xc \cdot x is at least c⋅(1,12)c \cdot (1,\tfrac12) at one of them, so no cc singles it out.

The vertices of PP are exactly its extreme points. If VV is the set of vertices, then PP is the convex hull of VV, and every finite set whose convex hull is PP contains VV.
